What is an all gender restroom?
All gender restrooms are restrooms that are not gender-specific (e.g. Men|Women), rather they are open to all gender identities and expressions. In other words, these restrooms can be used by a person of any gender. Importantly, there is a distinction between an accessible restroom and an all gender restroom. Accessible restrooms meet dimension and access requirements set forth by the ADA and building code requirements. While many single-use all gender restrooms are ADA accessible this is not always the case.
What is a single-use all gender restroom?
Likely similar to the restroom you have in your house, apartment, etc. It is a small lockable room with a toilet and sink, for use by one individual at a time, regardless of gender. Importantly, there is a distinction between an accessible single-use restroom and a single-use all gender restroom. Accessible restrooms meet dimension and access requirements set forth by the ADA and building code requirements. While many single-use all gender restrooms are ADA accessible this is not always the case.
Requesting an all gender restroom in your department or building on campus
If your department wishes to investigate the possibility of adding an all gender restroom in your building or if your department would like information regarding all gender restroom signage, please submit a Service Request through Facilities Services to initiate the investigation. If you have a specific restroom or location in mind within your building, please include this information. Once this has been submitted, you will be contacted to discuss the options.
